One of my long time employees told a story about his son. Many years ago he was at our office when the phone rang. It was the school principal and he said that his son needed to be picked up from school because he had been suspended. When he got to the school and met with the principal he found out that his six year old son had mooned everyone on the playground. When he got his son in the car he asked the question— Tanner, what on earth were you thinking? His son responded — Dad I had to do it, my friends “double dog dared me”

The Power of Thoughts: Are You Letting Lies Shape Your Life? Light bulb row with one lit up

The Impact of Others’ Words on Our Thoughts

Have you ever let others plant thoughts in your head that are not true or not right? I have seen it in others as well. For example, a person who thinks that they will never get a good job is not likely to get one. Some people were told that they never do anything right. And so they are more likely to have a high rate of failure in their life.

If we buy into the lies that the world and people around us speak into us we can become deceived and not know, enjoy, or live by the truth. We need to take responsibility for our thoughts. We have to stop acting as if there is nothing that we can do about them. God will show us what we need to do to clean up our thinking, but He will not do it for us. He gives us His word through the scriptures to teach us, but only we can make the decision to do what we should do. We can think properly and powerfully if we want to.

The Influence of Social Media on Beliefs

Many people that I coach and consult with don’t even bother to think rationally about what they believe and end up building their entire lives on some things that simply are not true. And social media has had a dramatic effect in this regard. It allows them to believe what is popular, convenient, or easy. In today’s world, people want to do their own thing — even if it makes them miserable.

Recently, I was seated at a conference table in the same cancer facility that I received my treatments twelve years ago. A lot has changed since then. One of those changes I find remarkable. In recent years much has been made of the fact that thoughts and attitudes can influence people in many ways. There have been numerous studies on the mind-body connection and hospitals have implemented programs to help people heal physically by becoming healthier mentally. I find it fascinating that the medical community is paying attention to this mind-body connection because it has been known for thousands of years—- just read the scriptures.

A Challenge to Reshape Your Thoughts

Next week we will talk about how to reshape our thought process. Until then, think about some thoughts you need to change—I double-dog dare you!
